NYC Half Marathon!

I woke up bright and early this morning (I only hit snooze twice!), guzzled some coffee and scarfed down some oatmeal, then headed downtown to meet 94Monkeys to cheer on some half marathoners! She brought a sign, and I borrowed some of her posterboard and one of her unused slogans to make another sign.

(hers said “Hey tumblr runners- we [heart] you!”). It made a lot of people smile and a couple runners commented on it as they ran by. I can’t take credit for the idea, but I was happy to brighten peoples’ run! Hooray for social media-based race signs.

At first I felt a little silly cheering on the elite runners as they breezed past us. I mean, if your bib number is 7, 51 minutes have gone by and you’re between miles 11 and 12, you probably already know you’re the shit and know that you’re going to finish without me yelling “Woooo nice job, you got this!” But it’s nice to be nice and that’s what we were there for, so I wooo-ed anyway.

There were runners streaming by and for the first hour or so all I could think was “This is so many people who are all running faster than I will probably ever run!” But then it wasn’t too long until people started looking they were struggling a little, and seemed to brighten a little bit at being told how awesome they were.

There were a few people in costume- I saw a couple dudes in tutus, a few statues of liberty, some superheroes and then this guy, who was not in a costume but WAS juggling and running at the same time.

All in all, it was a great and inspiring way to spend the morning. I know I’ll need the cheers and encouragement to make it through my half marathon in September, so it was fun to pay it forward.
